Lufthansa First Class - Boeing 747-8
May 25, 2017/ Simon Sjöberg
This is a part of a longer trip i did last year to Asia were I got the opportunity to use my well earned miles for a first class ticket on a few Star Alliance airlines. After a few re-bookings me and my friend ended up with a ticket that looked like this.
We started from Stockholm Arlanda with a 6 hour connection in Frankfurt and a visit to Lufthansa First Class Terminal. Flying from Frankfurt to Tokyo Haneda and connection onward to Bangkok from Tokyo Narita, all this flights was done in first class with Lufthansa and Thai Airways. Last flight between Bangkok and Manila was on Thai airways business class and was just a short jump compared to the other flights in first class.
This review will be specifically on Lufthansa flight between Frankfurt and Tokyo Haneda including a visit to Lufthansa First Class Terminal.
Check in at Stockholm Arlanda was not the smoothest since the lady behind the counter did not know what benefits we was supposed to get. We had to tell her what priority tag we should get (special HON-circle tag) and that our boarding passes should be in a special Lufthansa first class holder. She responded saying that none of that was true and she was right because she had worked there for several months now and never heard of it.... I just get so tired sometimes with personal that do not know how to do their work, of course this was not a Lufthansa staff since the airline SAS handle Lufthansa check in at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
Finally we got the it all right and passed the security easy with the fast track lane. A quick visit to the SAS Gold lounge were we sat down for about an hour until it was time for boarding.
Easy boarding and we had a 1 hour an 45 min flight down to Frankfurt were we landed 11:50 am and got directly info that the plane is going to park at apron position. This is more refereed to a non-gate position were all passengers need to get on a bus to get into the terminal. However if you are flying with Lufthansa and are connecting to a first class flight the same day in one of their hubs you have limousine service from the plane.
Finally after 10 min of taxi we park and I can see the fantastic sight from my window, the Mercedes S-class is there and ready for us! Also the cabin crew announced that the normal bus was not there so everyone had to wait, but after 1 min me and my friend was called upon to pass the other passengers since our ride was already there.
After a short ride we got to the main terminal and got dropped off at an elevator that took us to the arrival floor. Our plan was to go straight to Lufthansa First Class Terminal so we went out from the airport and took the 5 minute walk over to one of the best airport lounges in the world.
The building itself is located close to the main terminal building but totally separated from it but you will recognize it when you see it. We are being greeted in the reception by a host that leads us thru the dedicated security. no lines here so we are pass under a minute. The host ask me if I been here before or if I want a tour of the building, no problems I sad since this was my fourth visit the last 12 months.
We got to spend 5 hours in this amazing lounge were everything is for free. The bar has over 80 different brands of whisky just to get you started. If you are not in to whisky they also has over 20 different Gins or maybe 10 different choices of water (sparkling and still).
After passing some time with a whisky tasting me and my friend decides to eat a late lunch. It's only 2 hours to boarding and a 11 hour flight with full dinner service but if you are in this lounge you need to try the schnitzel! Overall they got a great menu here so if you are not in to schnitzel you can also have a sirloin steak or a plate with fresh asparagus depending on what time of year you are visiting.
First Class Terminal Menue
Eating lunch really passes the time and soon it was time for boarding. I have checked in advance and seen that I and my friend were the only one that was booked in first class on this flight. I also confirmed this with the staff in the lounge here now right before boarding. Image the whole front in the plane for just us two in 11 hours with free flow of beverage, nothing else then a big party!
Upon boarding you also get the limousine service to the aircraft even if the plane is at a gate position. This is done since the building has no connecting walkway to the main terminal so there is no other way to get to the aircraft. Also at this time when getting in to your car you get the passport back from the immigration so that is all taken care off without you knowing it.
The driver walks you all the way to the door of the aircraft and hands you over to the care of the cabin crews on board. We get greeted at the door by our lovely purser and also she confirmed that we are gonna be alone in the cabin for today's flight, feel free to jump around the seats as she sad.
We got seated in our seats, me in 1K and my friend in 1A. The crew directly asked if we wanted something to drink and we got one glass champagne each with some nuts to start off the experience with. They also handed out the menu and wine list for today's flight that was schedule to take 10 hours and 20 minutes to Tokyo Haneda.
About 20 minutes after we got on the plane we took off and got on our way to Tokyo. Since we are alone in first class on this flight the crew told us that we could try everything on the menu. It's surreal how much food they actually load on the plane for just two people but we didn't want to miss out on this opportunity. I ordered in every started that existed and started with the caviar service.
Nr 1 - Caviar service
Nr 2 - Was 3 starters each from the Western and 3 from the Japanese menu. A great tasting and together with the white French chardonnay it was good start on this dinner.
Nr 3- Main course: A plate with white asparagus, potatoes and hollandaise. A big serving but the crew told us that they still have to throw it away if we don't eat it...
Nr 4 - Dessert (chocolate mousse) and Cheese
After a long dinner, took probably 3 hours with it all my bed was made at seat 2A and my friend at 2K. Perfect when you don't want to sit up you can just get to bed without waiting on the crew to make the bed.
After this huge dinner we started to feel a bit tired so we decided to take a walk. I have a standard procedure when I travel in first class that I always go on a walk (also called "walk of shame) in my pajamas and try out all the seats in the different cabins below first class. Also upon arriving to the aft galley in economy class I order a Gin and Tonic and talk a bit to the crew. I always do this because I need to be remembered that not everyone can travel in this luxury and it's more a "get back to reality" for me.
Now it was time for some sleep. We still had about 5 hours left on the flight but I needed to lay down and rest a bit since we had a long day ahead. I told the crew I wanted to be waken up to eat breakfast before arrival, no problems they sad.
I slept for 2-3 hours, don't really remember more than waking up and seeing one of the cabin crew standing over me telling me it's time for breakfast. I got up and made me ready for the best breakfast you can have in the skies. Lufthansa does there breakfast like no one else when it comes how you want your eggs to be served. My opinion is if you can't make good eggs it’s not a good breakfast and Lufthansa does it perfect and why that? First of all they do have a real pan onboard and they also have fresh real eggs so they make my scrambled eggs when I order them. The result you can see down below.
Nr 1 - Start with the fresh fruit and some yogurt and Muesli.
Nr 2 - Great selections of ham, cheese, salmon and fresh fruit.
Nr 3 - The main course: Scrambled eggs and chives with bacon, freshly prepared!
Finishing this breakfast and the amazing experience on board we started our decent to Tokyo. The crew including purser came and sad good bye and thank you for flying with Lufthansa. I was not short to tell them what great service they had provided.
We landed at 12:00 am local time and after a short taxi we parked at gate 107. One more good bye and we got off the plane where Lufthansa personal meet up and escorted us thru immigration and the first two bags arriving on the belt was our two bags. We also got help with buying bus tickets since we were going to Narita Airport,
Lufthansa First Class is truly a great experience. If you get the opportunity to try it out don't hesitate since it's by my opinion one of the best first class products in the world with both ground and in air service accounted. With it's amazing crew and the luxury cabin with pillows from heaven you will arrive in the best and relaxed shape at your destination.
